Day 4 Rawnsley Park Station / Hawker. 70km return. 5 September 2018

We decided on an easy day today, yes this #retiredlyf takes it out of you.

After an enthralling morning that included, trying to get better water pressure in the van for our shower (very minor improvement achieved, I think!), a visit to check out the laundry facilities here (FYI $4 a wash and takes a mix of $1 & $2 coins for a 40min wash) and then the high point of the morning so far, a visit to the “Dump Point” (no matter how hard I try, this IS apparently man’s work!!)

Late in the morning we drove into the bustling metropolis of Hawker. Some of the big attractions in Hawker are a heritage walk around the town, the Jeff Morgan Gallery and Diaramas, the Seismograph Station and the century old Hawker Hotel.

We had a look through the gallery and decided we weren’t big fans of the artist, so we gave the Diaramas a miss, the Seismograph Station was closed, but we saw some seismographic charts for recent events at the Information Corner in the local petrol station. We took our own heritage walk around the block, past the council chambers and the Hawker Hotel – a grand old hotel of yesteryear with wide verandah around the street corner faces of the building on both street level and the first floor. Our heritage walk concluded with lunch at the Flinders Food Co est. 2018. Do yourself a favour, if your ever passing through or by Hawker give this place a try. The food and service were great. Everything is made on the premises and all our food was delicious.

On the drive back we stopped at a couple of those roadside lookout spots that most people drive straight past. The first gave us great views over the Arakaba Hills nestled in front of the Elder Range. The hills were very green from the recent rain and the dark Elder Range hanging over them looked ancient. It would be a great place to see the Range at sunrise. Further on we stopped at another lookout that gave a different perspective of the same view. Both were well worth a stop.

We had a quiet afternoon reading and relaxing, we must have overdone it, we really do need to slow down a bit, but hey, taking another one for the team. #retiredlyf Oops, did I manage to get that twice into this blog. 🙂

We had a 6pm booking at The Woolshed Restaurant, we left the van at 5:30pm and drove up to the sunset lookout we went to last night. The afternoon was really cloudy so the sunset wasn’t as brilliant as we had hoped, no colours on the Ranges, but the clouds looked amazing.

At 6pm went drove down to the restaurant, 5 mins away. We had a friendly very helpful young guy serving us. We chose to have the Lamb Tasting Plate, we are on a sheep station after all.
It was delicious, lamb done six different ways. And everyone was mouth-wateringly good, paired with a couple of nice wines and the meal was complete. A great way to finish another tough day in the Flinders.
